Carlsbad Caverns
 National Park
New Mexico, U.S.A.
Carlsbad has my favorite cave entrance, with a trail that
leads directly into this wide opening.  Elevators will also
take visitors underground.  At dusk, if you are lucky,
countless bats make a dramatic exit from the cave right
here.  The bats are a highlight of my New Mexico video.
It's easy to spend a whole day inside Carlsbad, where a
variety of different tours are offered.  Here are a pair of
attractive cave formations.
Any photographer's best friend is good lighting
inside a cave.  Turn on the juice.
The proper names for these classic cave formations
always confuse me.  I liked the solid post in the center.
The best green presentation I saw amidst the darkness.
Underground food and souvenir stands were a feature
of Carlsbad I had never encountered before in any other
cave.  Apparently these unnatural amenities go back
decades.  The souvenirs are shown in this picture, but I
patronized the cafe for lunch, allowing me to remain
underground until it was time to emerge ahead of the
bats.
