Palace of Mateus
The 18th century Palace of Mateus is best known for its
magnificent gardens, including one creation that is a
green tunnel on the outside.
It looks like plants running wild, but this is a tunnel,
with passage allowed on the inside.
The dark tunnel interior must be overcome by finding an
exit to the real gardens.
This was my escape hatch, a quite welcome exit from the
tunnel.  Now I could see and photograph the gardens.
The shapes suggest a maze of green, quite lovely
compared to the tunnel.
With trees added, this was the finest garden I saw in Portugal.
