The Halemaumau Trail
Hiking on an Active Volcano
The Big Island, Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii, U.S.A.
The Halemaumau Trail continues for three miles of lava
exploration in the main Kilauea Crater.  Above you see piles
of lava rocks that often mark the trail.  Smoking sulphur
vents give this lava trail a distinct odor.  A great experience.
The trail features a wide variety of lava displays from
different eruptions.  This smooth segment looks like asphalt.
Here the lava forms a mountain of dark rubble.
More red in this collection of lava layers, topped in black.
Similar red lava, but now it's a pile of jumble pieces.  Not an
easy trail to stay on, but highly recommended.  A longer trail,
also spectacular, is a hike through the Haleakala Crater on
Maui.  Both volcano hikes are featured in my video.
