Israel's most famous King and Italy's greatest sculptor
joined forces to produce Florence's best known masterpiece,
Michelangelo's David. Photography was allowed in 1994, so
both my video and stills were perfectly legal. In 2001, I was
told David could no longer be photographed.
The statue is of a young David, preparing to fight Goliath.
David is holding the slingshot he will use to slay Goliath.
David's face strikes me as suitable for that of a Greek god,
as carved nearly 2,000 years earlier. Probably something
close to what Michelangelo had in mind, since the
Renaissance stood for a return to the superior arts and
learning of ancient Greece and Rome.
